RURAL MAILBOXES
LOOK FOR THE ORDINARY AND DISCOVER THE EXTRAORDINARY.
Rural mailboxes are generic – they are black or silver. Except when they aren’t! Some are transformed into covered wagons, cows, moose and whatever. But this collection of sketches over the years shows some of the most inventive.
The latest, at the top, is a study in expressing the anger and frustration of having to prop up the box after it has been knocked down by the snow plow. The “Dukes of Hazard” installation was prompted by the US post office refusing to deliver to a box that was not the correct height – the car wreck is just an embellishment - another solution to repairing a mailbox. The tuba/mailbox celebrates the owner’s passion and plays a tuba solo when the box is open. A notice that the postbox had to have a number – didn’t mention that it couldn’t be Roman numerals – the postman asked what LXII meant. “Andres Sprout Society” hitched their box on the end of their sign / antique truck.
There is magic outside – we have to look for it and celebrate it!
